Where to find UK business grants: the free official sources

Start with GOV.UK's Find a grant service (Cabinet Office) for government grants, the Innovation Funding Service for Innovate UK competitions, and GOV.UK's "Finance and support for your business" finder; then check Business Wales, Find Business Support (Scotland) and nibusinessinfo.co.uk (Northern Ireland). Each is free, and most offer email updates.

For a business owner, or an accountant or adviser checking grants for many clients, this is the free official route to open UK grants, and how to get told when new ones appear.

Updated 19 October 2026. Official sources checked 19 October 2026.

Step by step: the free official route

  1. Search Find a grant

Find a grant is a GOV.UK service, run by the Government Grants Management Function in the Cabinet Office, for searching government grants. You can search and filter grants, check whether you are eligible and see how to apply. Sign up for updates about new grants and it emails you when grants are added. The service says more grants will be added as it develops, so it does not yet list every scheme.

  2. Check Innovate UK competitions

Innovate UK competitions are listed on the Innovation Funding Service, filterable by innovation area. UKRI's Funding finder lists funding opportunities across its councils, including Innovate UK (153 opportunities on 19 October 2026, many of them for research organisations).

  3. Use the GOV.UK finance and support finder

GOV.UK's Finance and support for your business finder listed 166 schemes on 19 October 2026. Filter by type of support (grant, loan, equity, expertise and advice), business stage, industry, number of employees and region, then use Get emails to be told about changes.

  4. Add the devolved services

For businesses in Wales, see Business Wales; in Scotland, Find Business Support, which brings Scotland's public sector support, including grants and funding, into one place; in Northern Ireland, nibusinessinfo.co.uk, which has a business funding search.

  5. Read the eligibility and closing date before you start

Each grant has its own eligibility rules, funding amounts and closing date, and some are rolling. Read the full guidance on the official page and check the closing date before investing time in an application. Also check your local council's business pages for local schemes.

What the free tools do, and what they leave to you

Every source above is free. The effort is in coverage and matching: grants are spread across several services, the alert emails are not tailored to a particular business, and an adviser has to check each new grant against each client's location, organisation type and sector by hand.

Where Grant Radar saves time

Grant Radar is a weekly email of open UK government grants from Find a grant and Innovate UK competitions, matched to each client profile you set up (location, organisation type, sector, minimum award), with what is new and what closes in the next 30 days. It is built for accountants, bookkeepers and business advisers with many clients. Information only, not funding advice.

Questions people ask
